Convergence of Technologies for Enterprise 2.0
While Web 2.0 is having a major impact on the consumer space, the underlying technologies such as virtualization of infrastructures, web services, service oriented architectures and mobile services for service oriented architectures could have even a greater effect on Enterprises. These developments have enormous implications for the (i) Infrastructure (computing and networking (ii) Services and (iii) Users (mobile).
The rising numbers of servers and increase in distributed storage is challenging organizations from cost as well as administration perspectives. Server virtualization is becoming popular to handle these problems. It is especially effective in managing the shifting infrastructure load with today's mobile users.
Use of service oriented architectures (SOA) for services is also becoming popular. SOA is a higher level of application development and focuses on modularity and reuse of components. SOAs bring software flexibility. As mobile users are increasing, more SOAs are being developed for use on mobile devices as well.
While infrastructure and services are important, it is the users who ultimately make Enterprise 2.0 work by communicating with each other to exchange knowledge and content. The convergence of SOAs, virtualization architectures and Web 2.0 social software will drive the next wave of value creation within and across enterprises. New Enterprise 2.0 services are emerging that offer the advantages of enhanced collaboration, employee productivity, customer experience, etc. Using the Web to deploy enterprise tools means employees can access their critical emails, contacts, data or whatever-wherever they are, so long as they have Internet access.
The 5th UCLA CIO Impacts Forum is titled "Convergence of Technologies for Enterprise 2.0". This event is planned for February 27, 2008.
The forum will discuss what these developments mean to the CIO today and in the future, and how the CIO of a Fortune 500 Enterprise can plan for such developments.
